About Life-Saving Naloxone

Naloxone (sometimes referred to by the brand name, Narcan) is a medication that reverses overdoses from opioids such as heroin and prescription painkillers. Opioids repress the urge to breathe – when someone is overdosing on opioids, they stop breathing and may die.
In New York, residents can get naloxone at participating pharmacies and some community-based organizations. For a list of participating pharmacies, view this PDF by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
