Take Care New York 2020

Working together to reduce health inequities on Staten Island

Take Care New York 2020 (TCNY2020) is the City’s blueprint for giving everyone the chance to live a healthier life. Its goal is twofold — to improve every community’s health, and to make greater strides in groups with the worst health outcomes, so that our city becomes a more equitable place for everyone. Unlike previous Take Care New York plans, TCNY 2020 looks at traditional health factors as well as social factors, like how many people in a community graduated from high school or go to jail.

Through TCNY 2020, SIPCW brought together over 130 community members to in Stapleton and Park Hill to engage in thoughtful and meaningful conversations about their experiences with health disparities. Following the convenings SIPCW created an action plan to address issues and is actively seeking funding.

What is the goal of TCNY2020?

In the summer of 2016, SIPCW received a Take Care New York 2020 (TCNY 2020) grant from the New York City Department of Health to work in Stapleton and Park Hill on Staten Island’s North Shore.

TCNY 2020’s goal is to improve health equity across the city by examining traditional health factors, like blood pressure and asthma, as well as social factors, like high school graduation rates and rates of violence-related hospitalizations.

Through TCNY 2020, SIPCW brought together over 130 community members to engage in thoughtful and meaningful conversations about their experiences with health disparities. Community members determined that violence is the most pressing health issue in Stapleton and Park Hill and that unemployment is a major factor leading to community violence.

What are TCNY Community Convenings?

As a part of this project, SIPCW was tasked with convening community members once again to pick one health need to focus on, choose objectives, and develop an intervention. SIPCW hosted its first Take Care New York 2020 Community Convening on October 15, 2016, at the Gerard Carter Community Center in Stapleton.

After taking part in small group activities and discussions, attendees selected violence is the most pressing health issue in Stapleton and Park Hill.

What is the status of TCNY2020?

SIPCW has submitted an action plan to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for reducing youth unemployment and violence’s impact on the North Shore, and it is currently actively seeking funding to implement the plan. SIPCW hopes to connect stakeholders, conduct research, and increase community awareness about unemployment to relieve youth unemployment on the North Shore.

TCNY In The Community

On November 12, 2016, SIPCW convened community members once again to discuss which solution to violence they would most like to see implemented in Stapleton and Park Hill. The convening was well-attended, with representation from the NYPD, street violence interrupters, after-school and summer program providers, and vocational training service providers. Community members determined that unemployment is a leading contributing factor in neighborhood violence and voted for improved vocational services as a solution.
