Daffodil Festival
In April 2015, SIPCW partnered with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation to host a Daffodil Festival,
which featured a full day of free activities including:
- cooking demonstrations
- nutrition workshops
- compost demonstrations
urban planning interactive workshops - health and wellness screenings
- entertainment.
The event was held to celebrate a massive daffodil planting that community members and volunteers had participated in during the previous fall. The festival aimed to encourage physical activity opportunities and promote access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Murals
Murals provide an opportunity for the community to use positive messaging to encourage physical activity, use of parks, and healthy eating.
SIPCW, New York Cares, and New York City Parks Department teamed up with local artist, Kim Salt, to develop a mural that reflects the community’s vision for a healthy Staten Island. The group canvassed the neighborhood surrounding Prall Playground in West Brighton to solicit ideas and engage local businesses, youth, and families on what it means to pursue a healthy lifestyle. The result was the Dare to Dream of a Healthier Staten Island Mural.
SIPCW, Borough President James Molinaro, the Department of Parks & Recreation, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Youth and Community Development worked with community members to install a mural in the bus shelter on Bay Street near Barret’s Triangle in St. George. Artists Scott Wegener and Gano Grills designed a mural intended to inspire healthy eating and active living. The mural, located near the Staten Island Ferry, is seen by thousands of people each day as they enter and leave Staten Island.
